Ever since watching Marlin Perkins (Jim did all the work) in Wild Kingdon, I wanted one of those funny looking Land-Rovers. I picked up a running but poorly 1960 version. What started out as a steering box overhaul ended up becoming a full out body off "restoration". The home page picture is just before I put the newly overhauled engine back in.
What she looked like when I started. Yes, the bulkhead is green and
the rest of her is blue.
The steering was a little loose so I decided to overhaul the steering box. The rest of the frontend had already been built.
One of the things I had noticed was that the intake manifold would get so hot it would boil the gas out of the carb when I stopped. I also thought I'd run a compression test, which turned up that #4 was pretty low. Off with her head!
It was too ugly to even take pictures. #4 looked like it had a lot of
rust in it at some time, and now was very badly worn and pitted. Engine
removal in the back yard looked a little like this...
Since I already had the front end off...
And...
finally..., well I guess I didn't take a picture with her completely
stripped. But I do have one of the rolling chassis going back together...
Dads coming next week to help with body work and paint. Hopefully by the end of 01/2012 I will have the body together and the engine running!
That was a lot of wishfull thinking, but we did get a number of
things finished. We had a number of days too cold to paint, and then my
compressor died. The high tech paint booth...
And some parts on the frame...
The bulkhead is mounted, but the tub and seatbox are just sitting there. This
weekend I hope to get some more body work done on the wings and tub so
they may be ready for paint soon.
